50 Kilos for 50 Years Challenge – Netley Beach Clean

Waves Shape

As part of our “50 Kilos for 50 Years” 50th anniversary litter picking challenge, we organised a beach clean at Netley Beach on Saturday 24th September to coincide with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) annual Great British Beach Clean. We met at Beach Side Car Park and after a coffee and a moderate wait in the sunshine, courtesy of the Solent’s dodgy tides and not Nic’s tide time Googling skills (honest…!), we set to work with our litter pickers.

We conducted a survey for the MCS by picking and recording all of the litter that we could find from the strand line to the water along a 100 m stretch of beach and then carried on with the litter pick down the rest of the beach for another hour or so. It was a lovely afternoon with glorious weather and it was nice be out in the fresh air doing something positive for our local environment. Once we finished, a few of us retired to the Prince Consort for a well deserved pint.

We collected 5.5 kgs of litter over the 100 m survey site and 13 kgs in total during the whole beach clean, which sounds like a lot, but a significant proportion of the weight was small scrap metal items. For more insights into the kinds of litter that we found, take a look at our report that the MCS generated from our uploaded survey data here.
